Welcome to the Governors page
Following several years of successful collaboration, on April 1st 2016 Bainbridge, Askrigg and West Burton Primary Schools (BAWB) became a federation. This means that we now have ONE Governing Board instead of three.

What is our role?
Our role is to govern the federation without bias or preference towards any individual school. We all have a shared moral purpose and collective responsibility for the children, staff and quality of education in each school.
- We set the strategic direction of the schools. We have a shared vision, values and ethos for our federation of schools. We make strategic decisions that are in the best interest of every child in each school.
-
We ensure every child achieves their best by rigorously holding the headteacher to account for the standards in each school.
-
We ensure the school finances are well spent and monitored.
What are our long-term priorities?
In planning the strategic direction of our schools, in 2015 governors produced a 5-year plan which remains in place for the federation.
Our key priorities are:
- Leadership and Management, including Governance is outstanding
- The quality of Teaching, Learning and Assessment is outstanding
- Personal development, behaviour and welfare of pupils is outstanding
- The proportion of pupils making expected and better-than expected progress is at least in-line with national averages.
- Establish a sustainable model of school organisation beyond Collaboration.
- Strategically address the outcomes of the Government’s White Paper (2016) – ‘Educational Excellence Everywhere’, including the academy agenda.
- Maintain an outstanding Church School ethos in Bainbridge and West Burton.
- Pupils, parents, staff, governors and the community have a voice which contributes to cohesion and school improvement.

What do our Governors do?
Some of us are link governors for specific areas: • The Quality of Education • Behaviour and Attitudes • Leadership and Management • EYFS • SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) • Safeguarding (including Child Protection) • Health and Safety |
We get to know all 3 schools and the staff by visiting regularly, and attending assemblies and various events |
We work in focus groups on specific projects (eg Federation) |
We attend termly Full Governing Board meetings and other meetings that focus on ‘resources’ (budget) and ‘school improvement’ (quality of education). |
We take part on panels eg; Headteacher Appraisal, Pay Review, Pupil Discipline, Staff Discipline |
We also undertake an annual monitoring programme of visits to the school which enables us to:-
• shape the direction of the school in partnership with senior and middle leaders;
• have an enhanced understanding of areas of strength and weakness so we are able to effectively support and hold senior leaders to account;
• improve pupil outcomes;
• secure statutory compliance.
